The humble petition of the undersigned Inspectors of the
Hongkong Police Force.
We, the undersigned Inspectors of the Hongkong Police Force, beg most respectfully to draw your attention to the inade- -quate salaries draw by us, and the pension allowance granted us on retirement, compared with the pay and pension of other Europeans in the service of the Colony, and the pensions granted to members of
the Police Force in Great Britain.
We respectfully suggest that you forward this petition for the favourable consideration of His Excellency the Governor. We are all aware that it may be considered an unsuit- -able time for such a request but at the same time we might point out that since the war broke out a large number of Police Forces at Home have been granted an increase of salary.
We believe that the Colony of Hongkong has been little affected by the war as far as revenue is concerned and that a prosperous Colony like this might well afford to grant us our
humble request.
Considering the length of our service we as a class are the poorest paid public servants in the Colony. It frequently occurs that Constables and Lance Sergeants leave the Force for other positions in the service and obtain salaries larger than ours while their responsibilities cannot be compared with ours.
We might mention that what encouraged us to remain in the Police Force in the past was the fact of having free passages on leave and free quarters. These privileges have now been granted to all other Departments who receive large salaries and who with us obtained a rise pay, but none of the servants in other Departments
